If a Buddhist monk in New York asks you for some money, be wary! - TopicsExpress

If a Buddhist monk in New York asks you for some money, be wary! From our friends at the Times. Or, at least, know that they usually arent real monks. Theravadan monks dont own money and often cant handle it directly, for example. More faux Buddhist monks are reportedly roaming Times Square and Manhattan. There are a few near Union Square. FYI: In countries like Thailand, monks do go on daily alms round, asking for food from the community which forms their substinance. They carry bowls and take food directly, and it is a wonderful cultural ceremony if you can participate. But they dont ask for money. Another man dressed as a monk, eating a hot dog while three topless women and a Spider-Man nearby posed for pictures with tourists, defended his actions. “I’m not a terrorist,” he said in Mandarin. “I’m not an outlaw, I’m not a thief.” With that, he got up and began walking toward the subway, saying, “I’m going back to Flushing.” The Times is on it! Hong Kong even has a Facebook page dedicated to these fake monks and their tactics. goo.gl/VZY8YK
