If oil is so lucrative, and if the pipelines are so safe, and if the tankers are built to such high standards, then there should be no problem raising the liability limit that companies must pay when an accident occurs. They should not be given the capacity to destroy without being on the hook for the cost of cleanup. The liability limits are much higher in other countries, meaning that taxpayers here wind up paying inordinately more for every environmental mistake by oil companies. This petition sets to rectify that.
