If you have been my friend for any real length of time at all you will likely recall my saying at some point that my favorite actor was James Garner. This has been reason for odd inquisitive looks over the years, because he is not what my generation had considered to be a movie STAR, but to me he personified everything I ever wanted to grow up to be. My fascination with him began at a young age because my Dad looked exactly like James Garner. I remember from a very early age looking at the tv, then my dad, then the tv, thinking thats so cool, they are brothers! Things were further blurred because both of them had very similar mannerisms, quick wits, and good golf games. While both served time in the Navy, my dad was a few years older, so he served during the heart of WWII. It is interesting to note that both were carpet layers after the war. Unfortunately my dad kept doing the carpet thing while James Garner decided to do modeling and go to Hollywood. (Pops you zigged when you should have zagged, hahaha). After my dad died in 1990 I did write Mr. Garner a letter, to which he personally responded. Unfortunately his letter was lost (along with my high school year books and many other collectibles of mine) when the storm sewers in my Moms house backed up some years ago. I was never able to meet James Garner in person, but I did make an attempt about 4 years ago while in LA on a business trip. One evening I drove up to his house and rang the bell on his entrance gate. I had a great story fully prepared that would have totally gotten me into the residence to shake his hand and have a conversation with him. Unfortunately he wasnt home. I even went back the next day to try one last time, but struck out again. You should have seen me, I was totally determined. Anyway, with all the other emotions going on with me right now due to Grant, Mr. Garners passing has really saddened me considerably. We lost a great actor on Saturday night, and I have lost my biggest idol.
