If you havent seen this video from Wyoming storm chasers this weekend, take a look. Amazing. The reason this supercell was so photogenic is that it is what we call a LP supercell (low-precipitation). They occur in more arid locations and have stunning clarity since youre not having to fight a shroud of heavy rain and hail to get a good look. (However, LP supercells do sometimes produce smaller quantities of VERY large hailstones.) The other supercell modes: HP (high-precipitation) which occur frequently in the humid southeast and sometimes produce tornadoes which are completely wrapped in heavy rain and impossible to see; and classic mode which is pretty much in-between LP and HP.
