If you havent watched it before, FIREPROOF is on TBN this week. Fireproof is the story of a firefighter, Captain Caleb (Kirk Cameron), who lives by the old firefighters adage “never leave your partner behind,” but when seven years of marriage to his wife Catherine (Erin Bethea) fails, neither one knows how to save the partnership, largely because neither understands the pressure the other faces. Caleb claims that Catherine is too sensitive, and doesnt show him any respect. Catherine tells her hospital co-workers that he is insensitive and doesnt listen. As they prepare to file for divorce, Calebs father (Harris Malcom) challenges his son to commit to a forty-day “Love Dare” test. Caleb begins the test primarily because his father asked him to rather than for the sake of his marriage. When Caleb discovers the books daily challenges are tied into his parents newfound faith (Calebs mother is played by Phyllis Malcom), his already limited interest is further dampened. Even though he wants to keep his promise to his father, Caleb becomes frustrated when every effort to win back his wife fails. Eventually he asks his father how he is supposed to show love to somebody who constantly rejects him. His father explains that this is the same kind of love God shows to people; they constantly reject Him, yet He patiently – maybe even stubbornly – continues to love them. With this information, Caleb makes a life-altering commitment to love God, and with His help, Caleb begins to understand what it means to truly love his wife. An engaging angle to Fireproof is the way it addresses the subject of being unsaved. The Holts are just two very real, very ordinary people with the kind of problems many married couples face. For them, however, God becomes present in their lives, first through Calebs friend, Lt. Michael Simmons (Ken Bevel), and then through his father. As a friend, Simmons takes an indirect approach in encouraging Caleb to make things right in his marriage, while his father takes an interactive approach. Fireproof hits home for both men and women. It’s a film that goes behind the closed doors of every married couple facing the end of their marriage…the struggle to give unconditional love even when it breaks your heart. While marriage is at the center of Fireproof, there is something in the film for everyone including comedic relief and some intense, firefighting action scenes. Cameron often supports Sherwood’s efforts. He attended the Hollywood screening of Facing the Giants, and instead of payment for his Fireproof role, Cameron asked that his Camp Firefly – for seriously ill children and their families – receive a donation from Sherwood’s church. Cameron is also a regular on the set of TBNs long running flagship program, Praise the Lord, as well as the co-host of the network’s popular Way of the Master series co-starring evangelist and author Ray Comfort.
