If you joining us in reading through Psalms and Proverbs, today’s Psalms are Psalm 47-49. The devotion is taken from Psalm 49:5-9, 15. “Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me— those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches? No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them— the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough— so that they should live on forever and not see decay.… But God will redeem me from the realms of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.” We tend to worry about the small stuff all of the time. Sometimes we are like horses that have blinders on their eyes and can only see straight ahead. When someone is more financially successful than we are we tend to either be jealous or at least wonder why we can’t have what they have? The psalmist in Psalm 49 seems to put everything in perspective. No one, even the richest of men, can buy their way out of decay. No matter what happens they are going to die. In the Star Trek series, The Next Generation, there was a story about a group of people who had been cryogenically frozen. One of them was a wealthy businessman, another was a woman who’d been placed there by her husband. There was no cure at that point for her disease so they chose to have her frozen in the hopes that they would cure the disease. All of them arrived in the twenty-fifth century with one common situation. They were all broke, they were all old, and they were all out of their element. Riches couldn’t save them and poverty did not increase the dilemma. We need to be satisfied with where God has placed us. That doesn’t mean that our desires should just be cast off. But it does mean that we ought to put them in the correct context. Do I like fancy things? Would I like a big house? Would I like to travel wherever I could without worrying about what it costs? Chances are the answer is yes, but that’s probably not going to happen. God gives us in real riches through our salvation. If we allow him, we can be rich beyond imagination in our walk with him. We don’t need things to satisfy our soul. What we need to do is trust him completely and allow him to guide us so that our lives are fulfilled and all our desires and wants are met through him. If we are walking with Christ we can rely on the promises found in John chapter 14:12-14 where Jesus says “very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
