If you need help registering to vote or updating your registration, PLEASE ASK ME WITHOUT FEAR OF JUDGMENT. I sympathize with people who are disenchanted with elections and/or feel overwhelmed by the process in the big picture of their life. As a progressive, as a gay person, as someone from a working class background, I dont often feel represented in elected bodies. I do, however, believe strongly that the electoral process is one essential piece of the struggle for justice. Democracy and justice are not given to us, they are created by us, not just through casting a ballot once every two to four years but through consistent engagement in our communities and direct action toward decision makers. Too many people have fought and died for access to the ballot to ever convince me that voting is useless, or fake, or inherently irredeemable. Were all busy making ends meet and its easy to feel that a lack of education merits staying home on Election Day. Believe it or not, I dont even feel as educated as Id like to be on a lot of important issues! As weve learned across the country, local and state elections have consequences that trickle up to the national level and the inverse is true too. Just do your best and vote for what your heart tells you is right with the information you have. After that, try to stay engaged. Youll get better at it and well all get better as a country, little by little. Were all part of that equation as citizens, wherever we fall politically. Anyone who follows me here knows my persona and perspective as a progressive advocate, but my openness to ideas beyond traditional partisan lines often allows me to explain the current state of affairs in an independent way. If you have a question about something happening nationally, or even in your state, that you want my perspective on around election season, consider me a resource. The elections piece may kind of be my thing, but we all have a stake in the big picture.
