If youre not committed, no one can help you. If youre determined, no one can stop you. These are the words with which my Mother both confronted and comforted me. She wasnt the tender-gloved mom that kept me from my challenges or candy-coated the reality of my hardships. The first female steelworker in Pennsylvania, hands calloused and jaw set, alone and without a safety net, she parented me to survive. Thriving was going to be my onus. Facing my learning difficulties could only happen face-first, and like her teaching me how to defend myself, she admitted, Its probably going to hurt. But when youre going through a hard time, turning back or even staying put is going to hurt worse than moving on. Take a hand-up if they are offered but never a hand-out or a hand-off. Do it yourself. Keep going and eventually youll look back and see what youve gotten through because of your willpower. This wasnt the distorted tough love of hurting someone under the guise of making them tougher. This was real love: telling the truth, so that an honest commitment can be made. My moms uncandied parenting has helped me time and time again, even today. Her realistic gumption has given me the wherewithal to not be seduced sugary fantasies of shortcuts and quick schemes; and the character to move forward - alone if I must - with integrity, even when it appears that things will get indefinitely harder, because the alternative is far worse. My mom said, Be grateful for any help you get but dont wait for it or rely upon it. Youve got your head, your heart, your hands and your feet: Grab a challenge and work your way through it; dont sit down - keep marching, set your heart on your goal, and use your head to find a way there, and if you cant, then make one up. I believe in you but you have to believe in yourself, and when you dont believe you can do it, start doing it anyway, and youll believe in yourself after.
