If youre unfamiliar with the Man and his work - or even if you are - this strikes me as a fine introductory sentence: Robert Stone was one of the few writers to capture the apocalyptic madness of America in the 1960s and ’70s, as the country lurched deeper into the jungles of Vietnam and the counterculture party at home turned increasingly nihilistic, as Woodstock gave way to Altamont and as violence - propagated by the likes of both Charles Manson and the Weather Underground - rocked the home front... R.I.P. There are echoes in Mr. Stone’s novels of Graham Greene, Joseph Conrad and Malcolm Lowry, but in his most powerful work, his voice is thoroughly his own — dense, philosophical, baroque, sometimes tipping over into excess, but capable of conjuring the emotional temperature of a time and place with extraordinary intensity and fervor. In novels like Dog Soldiers and Damascus Gate (1998), he deftly used his reportorial eye and gift for bravura action sequences to create thrillers that reverberate with remarkable political and psychological power... Yes.
