Im extremely frustrated. After researching everything I could read about Biochar, I built two retort kiln prototypes to test and make Biochar for my NSW 20 acre property on marginal soil (clay with almost no topsoil). After completing the retort kilns, I contacted the bush fire people to get a permit to fire up the kilns. No go! They would give me a permit to burn tree litter in my paddocks but not one to light an incinerator of an unapproved Australian design. I was told that even having a 44 gal drum made for burning stuff could attract a stiff fine. The 44gal drum was a Jolly Rodger style frombiochar-international.org/technology/opensource The Hebel block oven prototype design fully encases a 200 litre drum when operating. It was also unacceptable also because: 1. the design was not approved and 2, Hebel was not the correct type of building material. If I was in any other country in the world but Australia, I would not have these issues. Professor Flannerys 2007 comment “Biochar may represent the single most important initiative for humanity’s environmental future. seems incongruous with regulations preventing small farmers trying to fix up their own backyard.
