Im looking for some advice about my marathon woes and I figured this would be the perfect place to ask for advice. I really want to go for my official MM this fall but marathons are proving to be a struggle for me. The USAF was my 2nd marathon. I went out with a pace group this time at a comfortable pace. I felt really good until about mile 14 (I know, SO early) and my legs just immediately start to become stiff and painful. It feels like I immediately added 20lbs to each leg and they became stiff as boards. I struggled with this in my first marathon also. By mile 21 I had to finally do some run-walking. I finished at 4:46, a whole 16 minutes past my goal time of 4:30. My question is why is this happening to me so early on? In my long runs in training my legs will hurt but not like this. My 20 miler went well and I maintained about a 10:20 pace for that. I dont know what I am doing wrong but it makes my marathon experience miserable because of the long and painful back half. Is this normal and Im just being a weanie or am I doing something wrong? Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Im new to the world of marathons but I would like to continue!
