Im not normally a TBT-kinda guy but since my record showed up today, Ill play. When Head Trip in Every Key came out in 1998, I was a newly-married cash register jockey for Best Buy in Lewisville when I wasnt at the University of North Texas studying journalism. That year we heard a lot of Ray of Light-era Madonna, Shania Twain, probably some Sugar Ray and Im guessing Third Eye Blind on the BB satellite radio feed. If they played Tubthumping then I guess I was on lunch break because I dont recall that happening even though it was all over the radio. I do remember selling OK Computer every 13.5 minutes though …. I loved Regretfully Yours but when Head Trip came out, I have to admit it was a disappointment to me. Not because it didnt have an obvious single but because the Beatles influence was so profound. Were talking about 1998 -- the cusp of the new millennium-- and these guys were milking the sweet spots out of records cut in the 60s?! As it turned out, the record is a grower. You may not get it the first time but maybe by the 20th spin, itll make sense: a short timer major-label band skewering its labels motives and methods even as it racked up one hell of a studio bill on said labels tab. I skipped the Head Trip LP (like a dummy) but the Jokers with Tracers LP is great in all its unpolished economy. Recommended (if theres any left).
