Immediate stop for the Dams Projects Hmue Eain Zaw (Myit Makha) ========================================== On the caumupon beach of Thanlwin river, on the other bank of Mawlamyine , some people demonstrated against dams projects over Thanlwin river . On March 14 of International Day of preserving rivers and streams against Dams Projects, about 150 people from societies, national races including religious leaders held a commemoration for wishing free flow of Thanlwin river and demonstrated against Dams Projects on the caumupon beach of Thanlwin river, on the other bank of Mawlamyine. “There will be many side effects if we build Dams on the upper side of Thanlyin river, causing weakness to the flow of river, human-being and ecosystem in the long run, we need to protect them. That’s why we are participating in this commemoration,” said U Min Aung Htoo, a member of central leading committee from civilian coalition for transparency of Myanmar Resources Group. Myanmar Rivers and Streams Network made a press release dated 14 March against construction of Dams over Thanlyin river, Kwanlone , Naungphar, Tarsan Dams in Shan State and Ywarthit reservoir in Kayar State and Hutgyi reservoir in Kayin State. The announcement was signed by 33,538 national people and 131 groups of political parties including civilian societies. Dam projects will be invested by China, Thailand and Myanmar and expected to output about (15000) megawatts of electricity and those projects are threatening the ecosystem on Thanlwin river. “Paving the road and relocation of 40 villages are underway for the Kwanlone Dam project situated at China border and if Government loves the people , showdown contracts to the people. They [Government] are always talking about the good results of the projects and electricity output. In fact people know nothing, they should explain about this,” said Saw Thar Bo, an activist from Kayin Rivers and Streams Watch Group. Demonstrators called for systematic calculation of the results of Dams construction and showdown to the people. Affected results are currently explained by the representatives of national races from State concerned after the projects. Myanmar Rivers and Streams Network’s press release indicated that construction of Dams without the agreement of people could be at stake between government and ethnic armed groups for utilization of natural resources and sharing of profits. If the government continues for construction of dams, it can lead to the domestic conflicts.
