Impeachment move against Jonathan tears Kano Reps apart Written by Jacob Segun Olatunji and Kolawole Daniel - Abuja Two members of the House of Representatives are now at loggerheads over an alleged impeachment move against President Goodluck Jonathan. The two lawmakers are the Deputy Minority Leader of the House, Honourable Suleiman Abdulrahman Kawu and chairman, House Committee on Finance, Abdulmumin Jibrin. Just on September 10, Honourable Kawu, issued a statement dismissing the reports doing the round that there was plan by the lawmakers to impeach President Jonathan. In the statement issued by Honourable Kawu, who is a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), he had claimed that “impeachment of the president is not on our agenda as a parliament and as such, it is a figment of someone’s imagination to suggest anything like that.” But in a counter-statement issued in Abuja, Honourable Jibrin, alluded that “as a member of the House of Representatives and chairman, Committee on Finance, I read with absolute shock, a report in the newspapers and online media, in which a colleague, Honourable Kawu, Minority Leader of the House, reportedly told newsmen that the House dissociates itself from an alleged plot to initiate impeachment proceedings in the parliament against President Jonathan as a result of the crisis in the PDP.” The statement read in part: “With due respect to him, this statement is shockingly hasty, if not altogether contaminated by downright indiscretion. Honourable Kawu is not the authorised spokesman of the House, thus, he is not in a position to speak on its behalf. That responsibility is reserved for someone else who, as far as the world knows, has up till this moment, not made any public statement with regards the intra-party feud within the PDP. “Let it be reiterated here that the House has always exhibited an unprecedented team spirit and cohesion since the inception of the 7th National Assembly. We are not about to shed this highly treasured character at this crucial hour. “When a ruling party begins to toe the path of self- destruction in a manner that clearly threatens the unity of Nigeria, it is simplistic for anyone to reduce such a crisis to an internal problem that should be left for the party to deal with alone. The APC, an opposition party, realised this when it weighed in with a strong condemnation of the sealing-off of the New PDP secretariat by the police.”
