Important Notice from Anthony Craig DLP Federal Executive Officer Spokesperson for West Papua Matters I have just received back Australian DFAT cables on the Biak Island Massacre requested under freedom of Information legislation. Out of 17 documents found for the period 6th July to 6th August 98 12 were given partial exemptions and 2 complete exemptions. I am still going through the documents but its clear that the incident did take place. ABRI now TNI Indonesian military confirmed live rounds were fired into a crowd of demonstrators at the Water Tower with the West Papua Morning Star Flag raised. Armed Forces Minister Wiranto stated those responsible were enemies of the state for wanting independence and committing an act of treason which would not be tolerated. They confirmed people were shot injured and at least one death. Both the Indonesian military and the Indonesian Human Rights Commission were going to investigate the massacre or incident by some. It would be good to get a copy of these so called reports. I will consider appealing but I have to consider what I would get from the other reports. Will keep you updated.
