Impressive U-19s edge Oman, reach Asian Cup quarters A brace from Qatari talisman Ahmed Al Saadi took Qatar through to the AFC U-19 Championship quarter-finals as Group D winners in a 2-0 victory over Oman that eliminated Oman simultaneously with Iraq, who were knocked out at the first hurdle on Tuesday as they were stunned by DPR Korea. In the match held at the Thuwanna Youth training Centre Stadium, Qatar produced spirited attacks throughout the match as both teams entered the game with chances of advancing to the knockout stage. Following a cagey first ten minutes, Qatar appeared the more threatening side, with the Omanis reduced to hopeful punts forward and it was against the run of play when the first-half’s most Important play was produced by Omani striker Ali Khabit, who capitalized on a rare Qatar defense blunder before hitting the post five minutes before the break. After the interval, Qatar coach Felix Sanchez opted to field in Akram Afif, who’s introduction resulted in an immediate penalty following a reckless challenge from the Omani defender. A nerveless Ahmed Al Saadi stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent keeper Bajel the wrong way as he calmly rolled the ball into the opposite corner on 54 minutes. In the 64th minute, Al Saadi added Qatar’s second of the night as he headed home an Abdullah Al Ahrak corner. Neither side showed urgency going forward in the remaining portion of the second half, and top spot clinching for Qatar looked inevitable long before the final whistle. Qatar will now take on China in the quarter-final set to be played in Nay P Nay Pyi Taw next Friday
