In 1991, The ccouncillor of The university of Nairobi, by then the president of the republic of Kenya, now retired president moi ordered immediate closure of the university main campus swimming pool after an electrical engineering student(bob waruinge) drowned to death without the counsual knowledge of the pool guard on duty (mr moses siliwa) (R.I.P).MR bob, a resident of hall 2 room 302 had woken up early on 30/07/91 took a shawa and proceeded to SHANG PING constructors offices along loita street where he had an interview and later in the afternoon came bck to the room, took his collage bag and left.. that was the last time his roomate saw him alive, two days later his body was found lying dead in the swimming pool floor. the pool was reopened in 1996 after 5years of enquiry to what really transpired. today, i hear the same same story being retold in a different version. somebody was swimming with a khaki trouser, leather shoes, socks and a shirt on ? this is crazy..seems like somebody killed a comrade, probably due to cheap reasons like campus or university politics then he (or a group)drops his corpse in a pool..okey as a comrade and a die hard fan of the university swimming pool, I think I have more than enaf querries and disatisfaction about the management of that pool..I have raised many concerns about the hygienic measures taken to ensure that that pool has no algae, spyrogira and pramecium elements that turns the colour to dark green almost making the floor invisible. . in October, my sweet lovely girlfriend suffered a liver infection, barely five days after I took her for some training session in the shallow end, ofcourse as a trainee, she had to gasp some water and swallow accidentally as it is with fresh trainee.I took ha to a dispensary and the doctor reffered her to KNH for liver screening, she was found to have a serious liver infection caused by sodium intogens, and for those who understand simple pool chemicals like DTR and DPV used for sinking dirt and cleaning have sodium intogens though at a lower concentration. She was not the first comrade to be diagnosed with the same since over 15 students over the past four days had complained of the same, what followed was a closure of the pool order from the chief medical officer CMO. The pool was harboring dangerous health hazard ions, leave alone the dominant blue green alage..after 5 days the pool was opened with crystal clear watersrades, for the better part of January the water filter was not functional. ..and up to date its still not functioning, and comrades dare to swim in those waters. On Saturday, a guy dived on top of the other almost breaking his ribs simply because the water is not clear, almost opaque and u cant see a fellow comrade.no one is there to push the sports docket to rectify this...so yesterday somebody drowns like 20minutes and no one notices this, his body lies on the floor and other comrades r still swimming. Soo sad but anyway, I know the swimming pool is now closed in the name of police investigationand this might take even years b4 a conclusive end but what I can urge the next sports && entertainment docket Secretary is to ensure that the pool is reopened Immidiately he assumes office.for the fallen comrade,I doubt whether u drowned or somebody decided to cut short ua life but anyway RIP.
