In 1998, when a village boy like me got admission into the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, my admission fee was ¢100.00.(GH¢10.00). In 1999, we were told about full cost recovery at the tertiary level throughout the Country. This idea was championed by Prof. Ivan Addae- Mensah who was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana and was ably assisted by the then Hon. Minister of Education -Hon. Ekow Spio-Garbrah and his deputy Hon. Mohammed Ibn Chambers (In Charge Of Tertiary Education). As a village boy who cannot afford 3 square meals a day, I joined my colleagues under the leadership of Mr. Adongo (NUGS Prez) to demonstrate (Mobrowa Struggle) at the Osu Castle Under Prez. Jerry Rawlings but only to receive a lot of beating from the Police. This policy, later saw the light of day as our demonstration became fruitless and students were made to pay various sums of monies called "academic facility user fee" and "residential user fees" respectively 14 years on(2013), I can say that, Tertiary Education in Ghana is a Privilege to those who can pay. Huge sums of monies ranging from GH¢1,200-GH¢1,800 for undergraduate and GH¢ 2,500-GH¢9,000 for Post-Graduate studies.Payment of these fees is just 1/3 cost of Tertiary Education. There are other fees like Accommodation, Living Expenses e.t.c Government must intervene in this regard since the fees being paid are on the high side. There a lot of "village boys and girls" whose parents cannot afford to send them to school for academic work. I hope I am communicating!
