In 2000, world leaders committed themselves to the UN target of spending 0.7% of Gross National Income (GNI) on official development assistance (ODA) by 2015. Ireland committed itself to reaching the 0.7% target by 2007. However that deadline was later deferred to 2012 and then to 2015. Earlier this year, the Government indicated that also this third deadline would not be achieved, despite the target and the deadline being outlined in the Programme of Government As a member of Dóchas, HOPE fully backs its argument that Ireland urgently needs a plan to get its commitment to the international community back on track, and that the Government must halt the cuts to Ireland’s budget for overseas aid.
