In 3 John, the apostle John is addressing this letter to his beloved friend Gaius. John’s prayer is that Gaius prospers spiritually as well as physically. John speaks of his delight in the reports he is hearing about how Gaius is being faithful to the truth and walking upright before God. John praises Gaius for his hospitality toward traveling missionaries. These missionaries were following the call of God and not taking any help from non-Christians. John says that we should welcome and support such men and become co-workers with them in the truth. John tells us of a man named Diotrephes, a man who wanted to have the spotlight and be in charge. Diotrephes not only failed to recognize the apostles, he also slandered them. If John is able to visit the church, he will make sure to let this man know what he is doing wrong. Diotrephes is not even satisfied by refusing to show hospitality to Gods people, he doesn’t want anyone else to show them hospitality either. He is even throwing people out of the church for showing hospitality to Gods people. John tells his dear friend to not allow evil to be his example, but to imitate what is good. Demetrius is a good guy, everyone says so. John also endorses Demetrius and his character. John has many other things he wants to say but he doesn’t want to do it with pen and paper, he would much rather meet face to face. He sends greeting from their friends.
