In Pakistan today, the Chairman of the Tehreek-e-Insaaf political party, famous cricket player (and former populist presidential candidate), Imran Khan, who is prone to anti-US rhetoric even though he was educated in the West, commented on ongoing negotiations between the Pakistani government and the Taliban, saying that the talks made it clear which groups want peace and which do not. He did not elaborate on which groups he was referring to, but he also said that the Taliban did not want to enforce sharia law in Pakistan by force, but rather simply wanted to end the “U.S. war”. But Khan’s comments contradict those from Taliban leadership, which have consistently argued that sharia law should be for the implementation nationwide.
