In a very rare moment of solace at home, I found myself watching a re-run on EPSN of the classic Holland Vs Scotland game from the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. This was the game that Scotland had to win by three clear goals, and eventually won 3-2 against a very good Dutch side, who went on to lose the final to the Germans. Three things occurred to me. 1) The players spent most of the ninety minutes kicking the shit out of each other, and there were no complaints from any of them, or indeed any dives/simulation, and I dont recall any cards being given out. 2) Goals were not elaborately celebrated with kisses/hugs/pre-ordained celebrations, even after scoring one of the greatest goals ever Archie Gemmil was given a pat on the back and a handshake by his colleagues. So much more dignified. 3) The final thought occurred to me that that Scotland used to be like England are now, e.g. always qualify for the WC and doing very little once there. How long until England become like Scotland are now - never qualifying and with an ever dwindling pool of talent to call upon?
