In an attempt to halt South Africa’s chronic electricity shortage, the country is set to increase its diesel and gas imports as well as sign a deal for a private sector coal-fired power plant. That’s according to government who has now intervened to assist the embattled utility. It has devised a five-point plan to address the power crisis which includes short-term interventions over the next 30 days and launching a coal independent power producer programme. The implementations of the plan will be monitored by a technical team war room. South Africa has suffered its worst power cuts since 2008 this month because of power plant failures and emergency maintenance.
