In case you dont read our site at Two Old Farts Traveling, thought you might want to know a couple of important facts: The North Georgia State Fair is going on now at Jim R. Miller park until 9/28/14. Check out the website and seen when the best deals are happening! And Travis Tritts going to be there one night, with Kenny Rogers there the night after that! northgeorgiastatefair. The other thing is that another Atlanta landmark has fallen prey to greed of the owner. The Zesto’s on Ponce de Leon Ave. in Atlanta is closing. Tomorrow, Saturday, 9/20/14, will be its last day open. Not all of the Zesto’s, mind you, just the one on Ponce. Elaine, who works at that location on Fridays and Saturdays, was kind enough to tell me that HER personal plans are to continue to work at the location in Forest Park on Mondays through Thursday and trying to figure out how to fill in the other two days that she won’t be working, now that this location is closing. After 60 years at that location, a LOT of people will be shuffling — owners, workers, patrons. It was VERY nostalgic for me to sit there in a booth, eating chicken fingers and fries, while Jimmy wolfed down his Chubby Decker burger. It wasn’t at that location, but my first introduction to Zesto’s was in 1980, at the first location, when Georgia Radio Reading Service (GaRRS) began operations in the basement of Peachtree Christian Church, across Spring St. from the Zesto’s there, north of Pershing Point. GaRRS has since moved to better digs, Zesto’s sold out to Equifax and the whole area doesn’t begin to resemble the place where I spent HOURS volunteering time to the first service that broadcasts for the blind and print handicapped. In fact, I was inadvertently the first person to read the newspaper on the air, live. It was planned that Clarence Cadenhead would be the first reader of the Atlanta Journal, but board operator Phil Jones (blind from birth) “flipped the switch” while I was still on, before Clarence’s column came up. Phil still works there and I still miss him. I loved those times. AND the Zesto’s visits every Monday night, buying my and Phil’s dinner before I went on the air. So eating chicken and cole slaw today at the Ponce location was a little sad. But they STILL are the only place that makes REAL softserve ice cream — with real cream, not milk! If you get the chance, brave the traffic and follow the crowds tomorrow to Ponce de Leon Ave. to partake and say good-bye to a much loved Atlanta landmark, while the owner, with a new $1.6 million check in his pocket for the land and facility, laughs all the way to the bank.
