In case you missed our post about the Brambling sighting, scroll down a few posts for some even more exciting news we got word of this month. Peter Pyle offered some more information on this species: Bramblings (Fringilla montifringilla) breed in northern boreal and subarctic habitats across Eurasia and migrate to southern Europe, Africa, and southern Asia for winter. They are a fairly common vagrant to the Aleutian Islands and elsewhere in Alaska, and there are quite a few records of wintering birds in California and elsewhere in the continental US. As a long-distant migrant that breeds in Siberia it is a good candidate to get far out over the Pacific. Other songbirds that have reached Kure include pipits, Barn Swallow, Skylark, Savannah Sparrow, Common Redpoll, Snow Bunting, and Eyebrowed Thrush. Most records are of single birds, but a flock of 12-15 Olive-backed Pipits arrived to Kure in late September 1983, some of which remained for at least two weeks.
