In celebration of Black History Month here is a poem by Isa: Hypocrisy I struggle past the vile hold of discontent and self-loathing that has been taught, ingrained and cherished in my family. My whole family, my American black people. Taught to start well behind the starting line without complaint, never expecting to thrive but just to survive. Looking away from the mirror because it is so far from the image that America embraces and extols. Looking away from my women because they remind me of what I am not and what I will never be. Understanding the effect that America has had on these beautiful creatures, trying to no avail to dance to the guitar when they were born to dance to the drum. Trying to expand, reduce and relax their way into acceptance. Affecting the speech patterns and mannerisms for better or worse of that of the coveted object of the medias worship and therefore of all of our worship as well. I, understanding more than some but not enough search the eyes of my contemporaries for kinship and a small sign that the truth has not died but just been buried beneath two decades of apathy. Hoping beyond hope that we have not finally been beat into total and complete submission. Hoping that we won’t follow Michael Jackson’s example and start slicing pieces of our heritage off of our bodies like so much salami in a feeble attempt to conform to the Britney Spears, Brad Pit prototypes that we face when we walk out of our subculture and in to the world at large. I continuously search the horizons, forever on the look out for the next voice to help impassion us. The next Malcolm X to help us remember that we are here because of hypocrisy and that we remain in spite of hypocrisy. We need to be impassioned to remember that although the war bore fruit and we were successful, the war is not over. We need to remember that there were casualties. We are the casualties and our children are potential casualties if we don’t teach them. Like little Kim in a blond wig and blue contacts we will be lost forever with out intellectual evolution.
