In light of a new year- I would like to touch base on how many of us suffer from seasonal depression and how nobody talks about it openly. I feel its an issue thats talked about behind closed doors, if at all, whereas I believe everyone would benefit greatly from freely talking about their depression, their feelings and fears. But too many of us are fighting this internal battle alone. Depression is a silent killer. Imagine waking up in the midst of a war- theres open fire, youre scared and alone, youre unarmed and your biggest enemy is yourself holding a gun against your head and while you suffer in silence the world is simply watching, without lending a helping hand. But they dont know any better or do they? So while you sit and suffer in silence, with your life dangling on a string, those around you are telling you, Its all in your head- stop thinking so much. Lifes not so bad. As if it were that easy. As if all it took was the switch of a light: On ->Off, Happy ->Sad. Whereas this is not the case, there is no magic button and most people arent understanding of the fact that youre not just sad, youre not just vying for attention, youre actually in the midst of a war in your mind against yourself and your life is on the line. But what youre really doing, while all this is happening, is trying to keep it together on the outside, for them, while youre silently suffering within. Play the part, act the role, pretend youre happy because All the Worlds a Stage... Right? Wrong. If people simply felt like they could talk openly without being laughed at or judged then they would. Too many of us are ashamed to come out and openly say, Im depressed or Ive thought about killing myself whether its due to our pride or the mere fact that we simply have no one we feel would lend a listening ear or even worse for someone to blow us off and think what we are saying and feeling is solely for attention. I would like to point out that even though Robin Williams suicide DID bring depression to the limelight it only took a day or two for it to be swept right back under the rug. While we cant detonate this issue over night we can take steps to bring this issue to light. So I just want to say, that if you feel sad or suicidal dont stop yourself from talking about it out of shame because people will listen and if they dont, make them.
