In light of the constant chaos that ensues as of lately, many people are saying that this is why America needs to be the World Leader, in order to keep the world in line. Let me just address why thats a DANGEROUS way of thinking: 1: Assuming that any nation has a right to be leader of the world and enjoy geopolitical hegemony is a tyrannical and imperialistic ideology in of itself. I find a degree of irony in how the same people who (correctly) exhort us to be wary of the dangers of a one-world government, are oftentimes the same people who propose that the US be an ever-present military juggernaut throughout the world. 2: If the very concept of a World Leader is a dangerous concept in of itself, then why should we set any kind of validation or precedent for it? We fear the concept of the Russians, Chinese, Iranians or North Koreans doing the same, but we as a nation dont seem to bat any eyelids when OUR forces carry out atrocities around the world. Some will say that the US was building schools, repairing roads and giving clean water and education to Iraqi citizens, but Soviet soldiers in Afghanistan in the 80s thought the same, although in the eyes of their Afghan civilian hosts, they were nothing more than occupiers and foreign terrorists. 3: Our country cannot sustain a constant military empire that drains our economy and enslaves our populace (often times, as well as others.) It is the height of hypocrisy to pay lip service to fiscal conservatism, decry rampant federal spending and irresponsible government taxation, yet do just that by spending untold hordes of money on overseas bases and a constant worldwide presence. 4: The very idea of the intent behind Americas actions being inherently benevolent is a dangerous and slippery slope. The philosophy that we can not and will not do anything wrong overseas is at best terribly naive and misguided, at worst it is borderline sociopathic. Power corrupts even the best. If given world hegemony, no nation will stay pure in its intent for long. Even someone with only a rudimentary understanding of history will see this. 5: It is a total betrayal of traditional American values to pursue imperialism and occupation of another nation. The Patriots of the Revolution detested the British military presence occupying our homeland, so why would we inflict that same ordeal on another country? Surely, this concept in of itself is easy to understand. America should be a beacon of liberty and peace to the world, not of brash chauvinism and impulsive, militaristic recklessness.
