In my line of work, I have seen quite a number of things. - TopicsExpress

In my line of work, I have seen quite a number of things. Sometimes in order to make a decision, the heart has to be hard. This morning we caught an intruder in one of my clients premise scavenging for scrap metal. Stealing would be more accurate. Under the normal circumstances it would have been a clear cut case of handing him over to the police. But he was an old man. Past his 50s. And as you can see in the photos, he wasnt really the type who was rolling around in luxury. The problem was he had an accomplice who managed to escape and he had threatened to beat one of my officers who had caught him with a big shovel. So to report or not to report? I had 30 seconds to decide. In the end I decided to report him. It was a crime and there was no mistaking that. And 3 patrol cars came zooming to our premise within 5 minutes. Although to be honest, I felt it was an overkill. But whatever you may say about PDRM, they were really efficient here. The reason why I am writing this now, is that even though I had hardened my heart to making this decision which I think was right, I still feel a lot of pity for this man. I am sure he did it out of desperation. And I am sure he was in fear when caught. And after this, life isnt going to get any better for him. Where do we draw the line between compassion and duty? I saw a post from an infamous political personality asking if he will see his grandchildren again if he is convicted soon. Seriously, I feel more for this old man than for that infamous guy. Some people deserve sympathy without any play acting. Some are just born naturally manipulative.
