In one of the most significant rulings of its kind, native tribes in Canada were awarded ownership of a huge tract of land by Canadas Supreme Court. The unanimous verdict gave control of nearly 2,000 square kilometers in British Columbia interior. The same tribes who had been resisting efforts to clear-cut their land will now be able to lease out the valuable parcels for pipeline construction, logging, and other economic activity. Most view it as one of the biggest victories for native rights in generations. But, as is also often the case in America, the Canadian court wrote an exemption which could allow the government to take control if its in the interest of the Crown (Canada is a constitutional monarchy). Indeed industry is hailing the ruling, as it sets out rules for resource exploitation via collaboration with tribal leadership. The skeptic in me believes this unprecedented victory for indigenous people is actually a victory for crony capitalism. Stay tuned.
