In the coming weeks and months we hope to gather a better understanding of the day to day realities of folks living in the various Caribbean territories. We hope to share their personal stories here. The U.K. administered territories In the meantime, this is what we know about the dependencies under U.K. administration (Turks and Caicos Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and Bermuda). The governments of these territories have the right to legislate. For some, these islands are considered to be internally self-governing. Each island has its own constitution, but according to UN resolutions, these territories have not achieved a full measure of self- government. There are U.K. appointed governors on each island. The governor has the power to annul, and to decline legislation adopted by the elected legislative body of the territory. The governor also has the authority to impose legislation unilaterally on the territory without the consent of the elected government. This is an indication of continued democratic deficits in the U.K. administered territories. The BES islands (Saba, Statia, Bonaire) versus the U.K. administered territories. The BES islands are subdivisions of the Country of the Netherlands. The U.K. administered territories do not form part of the United Kingdom. The U.K. administered territories are members of regional organizations (Caricom), the BES islands are not members of regional organizations. The U.K. administered territories each have their own constitution. The BES islands form part of the Dutch constitution. There are many more similarities and/or difference between the two arrangements. Can you think of additional similarities and/ or differences? If so, please feel free to share!
