In this photo series Sleeping With the Devil Aaron Vincent Elkaim documents the tension between resource extraction, which is financially benefiting impoverished communities, and the erosion of traditional land based ways of life. The Dene and Cree peoples who have long lived near what is now the Fort McKay oil sands were impoverished, as are many first nations communities due to dispossession and ongoing genocidal policies by colonial occupying governments.
