In this weeks episode of Philosophy Talk, John and Ken were joined by Shannon Mussett in a discussion of Simone de Beauvoir. Shannon is professor of philosophy at Utah Valley University, and an important Simone de Beauvoir scholar. In her entry on Simone de Beauvoir (in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy) Shannon Mussett writes that Beauvoir’s famous claim, one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman is intended to destroy the essentialism which claims that women are born “feminine” (according to whatever the culture and time define it to be) but are rather constructed to be such through social indoctrination. But, is this kind of social construction anthemic to the existential ethos of radical freedom? In this Live Chat, feminism and existentialism will both come into play. How did Beauvoirs existentialist view differ from her lifelong intellectual and romantic partner Jean Paul Sartre? How does Beauvoirs second wave feminism differ from the first and third waves? Are there conflicts between existentialist thought and feminist thought? Join us for a chat that guarantees to stimulate and enlighten! - See more at: philosophytalk.org/community/live-chat/live-chat-shannon-musett-simone-de-beauvoir-scholar#sthash.iZ6lLUSS.dpuf
