In which the rector’s holiday spirits are restored… The - TopicsExpress

In which the rector’s holiday spirits are restored… The other afternoon I made what I had hoped would be a trip expedition to our neighborhood Jewel. It wasn’t quick. While I picked up what we needed for dinner, it barely registered on me that someone would periodically make turkey sounds over the PA-- gobble, gobble would be repeated from time to time. When I was standing in line to check out- this became more obvious, and more baffling and even a bit annoying. Until I got to the check out. There, at each register, was a sign inviting participation in thanksgiving food drive at The Church of the Ascension. And each time someone contributed, the check out clerk was obligated to say, “gobble, gobble”. Each time I heard Gobble, gobble, someone had given so that we could provide Thanksgiving dinner through two other Episcopal parishes for people in need. What I heard was not an annoying marketing ploy- but a joyful recognition that with the help of the management at Jewel, someone was sharing with us in serve the community. There’s probably many more ways we can be the point of connection for people in this neighborhood. .I’m convinced that people want to know God and make a difference in the world. I am grateful that we’re working with Jewel to gather the funds to put provisions for a feast on people’s table- and I am so glad that neighbors from across the street and around the corner are regularly part of the pantry and will be here to help with the Thanksgiving Dinner and will fill the church for Lessons and Carols and Christmas Eve. That is our mission, - to offer a connection between people in this neighborhood and the things that matter most- with Christ and the generosity we see in God. So, gobble, gobble indeed! Fr David
