Interesting tidbits: 1847 - Shakespeare Birthplace Trust buys The Bards birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon. 1858 - The first overland mail for California was inaugurated. 1906 - Roald Amundsen discovers Magnetic South Pole. 1931 - A Blimp was moored to the Empire State Building in NYC. Todays birthday crew: 1877 – Jacob Schick, American-Canadian inventor and businessman, patented the first electric razor and started the Schick Dry Shaver, Inc. razor company. Jacob Schicks first business venture, the Magazine Repeating Razor Co. (Founded 1925) sold a razor with injection cartridge blades designed much like a repeating rifle, where the blades were sold in clips that could be loaded into the razor without touching the blade. This business provided the necessary capital to develop his electric razor concept when he sold it to the American Chain & Cable Company in 1928. Schick also patented the General Jacobs Boat for use in shallow water, and an improved pencil sharpener. Schick became a Canadian citizen in 1935 to avoid an investigation by the Joint Congressional Committee on Tax Evasion & Avoidance after he moved most of his wealth to a series of holding companies in the Bahamas. 1926 – Tommy Bond, American actor noted for being the first actor to appear onscreen as Supermans pal Jimmy Olsen, having portrayed the character in the film serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950). 1930 – Anne Francis, American actress best known for her role in the science fiction classic Forbidden Planet (1956) and for having starred in the television series Honey West (1965–1966) which was the first TV series with a female detective characters name in the title. She also appeared twice in The Twilight Zone, including the title character in Jess-Belle and as Marsha White in The After Hours. 1960 – Kurt Busiek, American comic book writer notable for his work on the Marvels limited series, his own title Astro City, and his four-year run on Avengers. 1966 – Wil McCarthy, American science fiction novelist, president and co-founder of RavenBrick a solar technology company, and the science columnist for Syfy. McCarthy popularized the Wellstone, or Programmable matter concept. Happy birthday guys!
