Introducing 2014 Durango Autumn Arts Festival Juror PETER KARNER of Peter Karner Pottery A prolific professional potter since 1996, Peter Karner has participated in nearly one hundred fine arts and fine crafts festivals and invitational exhibitions over the last ten years. His work has been featured in Ceramics Monthly magazine and has won numerous awards. Peter currently lives and works in Denver, CO About His Work The forms and surface decoration of his modern, yet timeless pots, embody the soulful expression of his favored art forms: African and Japanese textiles, Islamic iron work, modern architecture, and the natural world. He attributes his love of geometrical forms and surface decoration to his childhood experiences of his mother’s quilts. Peter’s pots are made of stoneware that is fired in a hard brick gas kiln to 2300 degrees F in a heavy reduction atmosphere. Each piece is created individually by throwing on the wheel, hand-building, or a combination of the two. He applies surface decoration in multiple layers and employs methods such as wax-resist and brushwork to imbue his patterns with depth. He uses a base glaze designed to capture carbon from the atmosphere in the kiln, which interacts with the decorations he applies onto the glaze, creating mesmerizing surfaces on his pots. This “carbon-trap” effect is random and can add tremendously to the overall energy of a piece. See more of Peters work at peterkarnerpottery.net.
