Is it Normal Traffic or a Threat? Just as many department stores - TopicsExpress

Is it Normal Traffic or a Threat? Just as many department stores assume that shop lifters are entering the store every day, security professionals need to assume that hidden in what looks like assumingly normal traffic are traces of reconnaissance activity that must be uncovered. It is incredibly difficult to uncover this traffic because just as department stores can’t initially tell customers apart from shop lifters, many firewalls and other traditional security strategies can’t tell the difference between malware and a business’s ordinary network traffic. Full time security teams at department stores often assume that the shop lifters are always there, trying not to be noticed. Hopefully, when these criminals hide something they don’t plan on paying for, they will be caught but, a significant percentage make it out of the store with merchandise they didn’t buy. Perhaps the shop lifter exhibited suspicious behaviors but, surveillance cameras aren’t designed to detect it. Just as some shoplifters are successful at stealing from department stores, many forms of electronic threats are making it out of your company with information you’d rather not see get past your next generation firewall. How do we stop it?
