Is it possible to feed a growing population with fewer resources? Experts predict that the world will need to produce 70% more food using fewer resources by the end of the century. But with the growing cost of food production, increasing scarcity of resources and the emerging economic and social burden of diet-related health conditions, the world faces an extremely difficult road ahead. In 2013, we struggle to meet basic needs of the population – a place to live, food, water and health care. And despite intervention by international aid organisations, close to 80% of the world’s population still live below the poverty line. So what will happen once the population increases by a further 3 billion people over the next 40 years? Day Three for the Melbourne Festival of Ideas will consider whether it is possible for the world to attain a sustainable and robust food system for the future and will also outline the consequences of inaction.
