Islam speaks of no difference in value Between men and women Islam views men and women to be equal in their humanity. The Holy Quran did not address men alone, when treating general issues in life; but meant both for men and women to hold due responsibilities in this regard. Thus, the Quran values the roles of male and female believers alike, for Allah says: “It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path.”(33:36). Hence, both men and women, go along side by side practicing their duties before Allah, in accordance with His Messenger’s teachings, so that one’s life would be a portray of one’s sound actions… All that includes men and women; thus, male and female believers ought to abide by Allah’s holy decisive speech. In this course, God’s command to put effort of all that is good, by men and women, is for both to handle the right way, for He says: “So their Lord accepted their prayer: That I will not waste the work of a worker among you, whether male or female”--(3:195). Thus, any work is not that in which there be a differentiation between a man and a woman, for it may well be that, at times, the work of a woman may exceed in virtue and essence that of some men. Therefore, we find Islam not gapping spaces between men and women, when introducing its instructions in the field of the good, the work and virtues. For instance, we see how Allah speaks, in the chapter of “Al-Ahzab”, of the Hereafter results of the righteous behavior both of men and women: “Surely the men who submit and the women who submit, and the believing men and the believing women, and the obeying men and the obeying women, and the truthful men and the truthful women, and the patient men and the patient women and the humble men and the humble women, and the almsgiving men and the almsgiving women, and the fasting men and the fasting women, and the men who guard their private parts and the women who guard, and the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember. Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a mighty reward.” (33:35). Moreover, there must be no differentiation between males and females, on the level of value and vitality of conviction, good work, post and stance, since their sound sense of humanity would be able to enrich life with compliance (to all that God decreed), belief, modesty, patience, charity, fasting, remembrance of Allah, chastity and so on… Also, the Quran is estranged from the notion of the superiority of men over women. And if we were to read the Holy verse: “Men are the maintainers of women,” (04:34), it is a must that we be aware of the real notion that only at the level of management of some household issues, inside the house, is the case Allah introduces in the latter verse, and not a sense of tyrannical authoritarian control of husband over wife! It is important that every institution encompasses a sense of management where a manager and supervisor deals with matters; and chaos would rule should there be multiple managers… Allah has spoken of the marital institution not in terms of legal codes and terms, where the husband and wife would rally to conquer one another: “And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts)”—(30:21). So the marital life must be that in which one heart embraces another, and one soul melts in love with its counterpart, and a sense of mercy from one side ploys to cover up for the other (so that life would be easier). In the Islamic view, we find that any human being’s value is in his very humanity; and that the male and female factors are details of the overall essence of human diversity, where each side possesses the fruit to be added to life, so life would be more zestful and rewarding. The female side has got the spiritual, emotional and vibrant aspect of man-woman relationship, while the male side has got the mental, spiritual and emotional aspect of that relationship. By this, the roles intersect and complement one another, and the humanity both of the man and the woman turns complete.
