It is now well documented that the chalk markings often seen (see picture) are an urban legend and police have no evidence to support any such crimes related to chalk markings. Police recently received concerns over a white circle with a cross through it at locations in Rayleigh - Downhall Park Way and Cheapside East. This is shown in the urban legend to mean nothing worth stealing. Police enquiries reveal these marks were actually put down by the Water board to mark some proposed works. However it is always worth remaining vigilant.
