It was 40 years ago that Jaws the novel was published to huge fanfare, spending 44 weeks on the best seller list. I was only 11, but got caught up in the hoopla and rode my bike to the public library closest to my San Jose home and checked out the book. I devoured it, which is hilarious considering how racy it was. In the book, unlike the film, the Richard Dreyfuss character has AN AFFAIR! with the wife of Chief Brodie. They snuck off to seedy hotels and author Peter Benchley was quite explicit in describing their encounters. Did I mention I was 11?! Anyway, Steven Spielberg dumped the seedier elements of the book and captured the terror of the story a year later in 1975 blockbuster film. I was 12 and saw it at the drive-in with friends. Ah, it was a different time.....
