It was the summer vacations, I was back at home. Due to some transmission problems, the electrical line was to be cut for three days. We were relying on an inverter, but one evening, it suddenly stopped working. My mother suggested to my father to call the repairman. I am an engineering student, an IITian. I had studied inverters in my books. So I started telling my mom how an inverter works. In the dark room, I was giving lectures on the working principles on an inverter. I told her about currents, and voltages, and inductors, and capacitors, and everything that I was taught in the college. Suddenly, the tube-light on the left glowed! Surprised, I went out of the room to check what happened. What happened next blew my mind away. (Just kidding! Im watching a lot of social experiments these days, you know) Well, anyway, while I was delivery lectures on the mechanism of how an inverter works, my father, who is a doctor, had fixed the problem. He had actually made the damned inverter work! That day I realized knowledge is important, but whats more important is whether or not you know how to apply that knowledge in real life. P.S. Before someone very intelligent comments, I will say it myself. No, I am not suggesting to scrap from the syllabus the working principles of a machine and teach students how to repair. Theory is important, but so is practical knowledge.
