It would not be right to not complete the last thoughts in chapter 1 of John before entering into chapter 2 because chapter 2 starts with a reference back to chapter 1, although in the original text there were no chapters and verses and the text flowed freely... John 1:49-51 The Voice (VOICE) Nathanael: 49 Teacher, You are the One—God’s own Son and Israel’s King. Jesus: 50 Nathanael, if all it takes for you to believe is My telling you I saw you under the fig tree, then what you will see later will astound you. 51 I tell you the truth: before our journey is complete, you will see the heavens standing open while heavenly messengers ascend and descend, swirling around the Son of Man. We find that John the Baptist had been baptizing in the Jordan and had become the subject of great attention and questions from the religious leaders and Pharisees. We see Jesus calling some of His first disciples and then when Jesus called Nathaniel we see that Nathaniel was astounded because Jesus revealed to him that He had seen Nathaniel under the fig tree, in a vision or a revealing or a foreknowledge Jesus had seen Nathaniel. Thats so cool, but it may be disconcerting to some of you that Jesus sees you where you are, where youve been, and where you are headed and He still loves you, none the less He sees you. He is all seeing, all knowing, full of grace, mercy and compassion. Jesus goes on to astound Nathaniel with the fact that Nathaniel would also partake of this ministry journey with Jesus and that God would allow Nathaniel to see, to be revealed to Nathaniel the heavens standing open while heavenly messengers ascend and descend, swirling around the Son of Man. Talk about a revelation, a revealing, an amazing promise and when Jesus said this it happened because what He spoke and speaks comes to pass in its time... So Jesus had just finished up with Nathaniel and then we roll into chapter 2...
