Its been 4 days since Dallas SusCon 2014 officially ended, but the emotions are still running strong. What a weekend. Endless thanks, respect and love for the organizers that put this event together. I feel that I learned more technical as well as psychological information to better my skill-sets as a suspension practitioner than any of the previous events I have attended. I also felt more exhausted than previous ones. This may or may not have had something to do with the insane amount of things to do the event provided us with; most conventions of this size (in practically any other industry) provide this kind of package over a space of 5 days. Imagine the level of exhaustion leading up to this event for the organizers for a minute. Thank them for breaking their backs for us to be able to come together, learn, teach, hang out, hang each other, and even watch a collaboration between CoRE and Fakir Musafar. I find that the better the event experience is, the harder the PSD hits. I just got home earlier today, and as I was traveling with friends that attended the event, I dont think I felt it that much on the road. However, today, its finally hitting me, and its pretty rough. Thankfully, this community is growing, and the number of events is increasing with the size; the time between events is decreasing. Even the week of APP in Vegas is starting to see a lot more suspension related activities going on; desert suspensions, classes that are touching on the topic, and related procedures. The annual Oslo SusCon is right around the corner, then Mecca, APTPI, BMXnet, and the first ever New Zealand SusCon (and a number of other suscons, please forgive me for not listing every single one). In between those are the shows we see at conventions, summer campouts and monthly private sessions across the world. There are even large scale, themed parties such as Theatre Bizarre in Detroit, MI and Trauma the week after that in Columbus, OH. As those that were in Dallas heard, next year, and for one year only, we will be holding an event in NYC instead of Dallas. This will not be a SusCon. It will not be a Convention related event. It is not in any way supposed to replace the Dallas SusCon, which will be taking a one year break. It will, instead, be the second Symposium. The first Symposium was held in Oslo, 2 years ago, and featured an installation by Stelarc. Håvve Fjell created the Oslo Suspension Symposium to offer a different kind of event that is not only learning oriented, but that also provides an extensive artistic program. it showcased collaborative installations from multiple reputable suspension teams, as well as bringing Stelarc back into our world. The NYC Symposium will be held on Easter weekend, 2015, in NYC. It will be hosted by Wings of Desire (WoD), Traumatic Stress Discipline (TSD) and Anchors Aweigh Suspension (AAS). The Symposium will be centered around a very large scale installation that I have named Skin. It is a prototype for future installations, and will be bringing together practitioners from across the world of suspension, internationally. We are going to get together, and for 2 nights, convey to the world that beneath it all, devoid of gender, ethnicity and other social norms, we are all made of the same skin and blood. There are many specifics that we are working on, and will be releasing details, as well as reaching out to people individually over the upcoming months. I truly believe that this will open new avenues for us all, and will be an opportunity to showcase what we do best in an incredibly positive way. Mark your calendars, and keep a look out for more information! Mostly, thank you all for making all of this possible.
