Its been a busy past couple of days here at The Turtle Hospital with two more new admits and a busy surgery day! Riley an FP Green was admitted after a family found him floating with FP tumors in Key Largo. Not knowing about the Turtle Hospital they called the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (another one of our great partners) and an officer was on the scene to respond. Officer Sweddson met rehab specialist Devin halfway in Islamorada and Riley was transported back to the hospital. The second admit came earlier this morning when some Marathon locals noticed something suspicious floating 100 yards offshore of Sombrero Beach. Onlookers stood from the beach keeping their eye on the turtle and one by the name of Susan even took to the water to make sure the turtle would stay within reach. When rehab specialist Devin arrived at the scene, Eddie and Susan were both willing to get in the water and help bring the large turtle to shore. Serenity the young loggerhead was later named, was captured in the net about 50 yards offshore and brought back in to the Turtle Hospital. Suffering from an old boat strike injury that may have severed her spine, Serenity is on the long road to recovering to try and get movement returned to her back flippers. Today was also surgery day with our wonderful Dr. Doug Mader! Kimian, a FP green admitted earlier this week had an endoscopy performed and it was revealed she was a girl! Kimian, Dirk, and Kobit later received tumor removal surgeries and started their year of continuing to go tumor free until their releases in 2015. Big thank yous to our wonderful rescuers and supportive community along with special thanks as always to Dr. Mader for spending his day with us!
