Its just a theory... The use of the word theory in the academic and the non-academic world is one of the biggest flaws in our knowledge based society. When someone (non-academic) states: I have a theory they mean I have a thesis, this is how the word theory is used in general. Someone has a (unproven) concept of how something works. In the academic world, when someone states: I have this theory they mean I have this theory of how this works, it has been confirmed by empirical studies and its results can be reproduced by independent scientists. So the next time you claim to have a theory, please be ready to back that theory up by some facts. Otherwise its just a thesis statement which in all academic papers is only the tip of the iceberg. The misuse of the world allows a non-academic individual to take years of research and peer reviews and toss it out the windows because Its just a theory.
