It’s a great time to visit Canal Park for a sampling of what Christmas was like in the mid-1800s canal era in Indiana. The Canal Interpretive Center will be resplendent with holiday gift ideas, entertainment, food and snacks, and a visit both days from 1-3 p.m. by Santa Claus. Don’t forget to pick up some homemade apple dumplings and ice cream, and homemade cookies – always the holiday favorite at the canal. Wander through the historic cabins that include the Bowen cabin with hand-crafted wood and cloth items, the Kuns Cabin with gourmet caramel apples and handmade lotions, the Fouts Cabin with a warm fire blazing in the hearth, the Blacksmith shop with the smithy swinging his hammer, and the basket weaver and broom maker cabins with demonstrations of period craftsmanship. The newest cabin on site, the Loom Cabin, will also be open. Crocheting and leatherworking demonstrations will be held during Canal Christmas. A highlight of the village is the 1844 restored Reed Case House, the former home of the construction superintendent and businessman who built this section of the canal. The house will be decked out for the season in fresh greenery, candles and ornaments in keeping with the 1800s. Visitors will enjoy the delightful voice of Kathy McGraw in her traditional dress as she greets all with songs of Christmas past on Saturday. As they stroll through the house and wander among period furnishings, visitors can also sample tasty Christmas punch and cookies. In the Interpretive Center visitors can find rugs, soap, wreaths & greenery, salsa, wooden ornaments & toys, pottery, tatting, crocheted items, sewing-aprons, pillowcases, jewelry, alpaca products, baskets, brooms, purses, hair accessories, embroidered T-shirts & sweatshirts, and rustic décor for sale by local crafters and vendors. Take a break from wandering the village and center and sit for a spell and enjoy some easy and distinctive music. On Saturday the lineup includes Tom Bagues from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., Julie Dennison and Kandi Magner as Irish Eyes from 12 p.m.-1 p.m., and Howie Clark from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. On Sunday Paula Dillard entertains from 1 – 3 p.m We will see you on December 13th & 14th.
