It’s almost summer time. The weather in Denmark these days sure feels like it already! While enjoying some ice cream, how about making plans for some academic activities in August? We have a great suggestion for you: Join our summer school about human rights in the international system! The course will first consider the question of ‘what are human rights?, exploring the debates over their theoretical foundation. Second, it will trace the historical development of human rights within the international system, examining both the political and legal developments that resulted in the growth of the post-war framework. Third, it will examine thematic topics in the post-Cold War international human rights system, including women’s rights, the rights of refugees, the Asian values debate, humanitarian intervention, the development of the International Criminal Court, the role of transnational advocacy networks in the promotion of human rights, and human rights and security in the War on Terror. The course will be held during the first 3 weeks of August in Odense and you can gain 10 ECTS. During the day you would do some intense studying and after class and on the weekends you can bring your books to one of Odense’s beautiful parks by the river, make a bike tour to the coast or hop on the train to Copenhagen. How does that sound? Students who are already enrolled at International Security and Law can simply sign up via Self Service in May like for any other course, other SDU students will have to check with their study boards whether they can chose it as an elective course and students from other Danish and European universities are welcome to apply as guest students for free. Students from outside the EU and those who are not enrolled in a university will have to pay a fee of around 4100 DKK (ca. 550€). Via this link you can find the full course description for more details: sam.sdu.dk/study/fagbasen/fagbesk.shtml?fag_id=27110&print=1 We look forward to seeing you in Odense in the summer! :)
