It’s been a week now since we have been waking up to the flood disaster in J&K. Like many corporates and organisations out there, CMS Info Systems too has been putting together our own relief response. I felt that it is important that we get as close as possible to the relief effort as possible to plan our aid. We have been coordinating with the IG Police, Jammu and the Divisional Commissioner in charge of the relief camps. What’s emerging is that the ground situation is far worse than what we are seeing: · 50,000 homeless in Jammu and nearby areas, 20,000 yet to be rescued and rehabilitated · 30% population in Srinagar homeless without food and medical aid. · People are fearing to return to their homes due to risk of structural damage. · The relief material in hand is nowhere close to what is immediately required, let alone for the coming weeks. · There are limited air force planes and hence relief material transportation are getting delayed due to prioritising of rescue operations. This post is a simple appeal to my family friends and colleagues. If your organisation is already working towards this, then I wish you all the best. But if you have been wondering on how best to channelize your efforts, you could consider joining hands with what we are doing. CMS will be having a team on the ground this week, to put together the best response from our side. The important things to figure out is accessibility, reaching it to the last mile and making sure nothing gets lost in the system. We intend to put together a package of what we have been briefed are immediate essentials like tents, blankets, Dry food, Solar lanterns, Medicines and reaching it to the relief camps. We will also be having a team of volunteers on the ground. At the same time we are working with GoAir and BlueDart, both of whom have been extremely generous in stepping up and offering to reach the relief packages to identified centres. Please let me know what kind of contribution you would be comfortable with and we could get back to you with ideas. We can also put you in direct touch with the suppliers we are sourcing from, so that you can make your payments directly and route the supplies along with ours. We have the capabilities between us to pull together and make it better. What’s crucial is that our aid is effective, sustained and our concern and urge to help does not wane after the first few weeks, when the issue recedes from our collective consciousness.
