Ive been intrigued as to how and why people follow fad and quick fix diets that not only have no scientific backing, the science tells us unequivocally that these type of diets will lead to them becoming fatter in the long term. In the last few weeks I have been asking people who do these types of diets a series of questions to find out the answer. Basically, the feeling I am getting at present is that people just want to be told what to do. They dont want to think about why or how something might or might not work, whether the person giving the information has any nutritional or dieting knowledge, whether the diet is nutritionally sound, or what the unwanted consequences might be. They are just happy to and want to follow a guru who tells them what to do..even more so if there is a happy group of followers supporting each other on their journey to nowhere. For the most part, people CBF to find out information themselves, on the method their guru is using. There is also the attitude or belief that the gurus or diet companies must be smart people who know stuff or they wouldnt be successful. I am hearing this fallacy repeatedly. They are smart alright, just not in the way people think. They are, of course, ignoring the crucial role of marketing to a programs success. Unfortunately, anyone with passion and belief can market anything extremely effectively...which is why MLM companies in particular recruit people with no nutritional knowledge to market products to their friends. Make someone a believer and they will become extremely effective at marketing through their passion for the product, regardless of its efficacy. The product or diet itself can be totally worthless, but if enough believers say its amazing, it will be successful ... From a marketing point of view..the fact that it doesnt work is apparently irrelevant. I am beginning to also see a pattern that people dont want the responsibility of success or failure. If something fails, it is the gurus fault. If it succeeds (in the short term), the guru is praised. Whether the person does or doesnt put in effort to achieve their goals is irrelevant in this way of thinking. It is all about whether the guru and their methods or products succeed or fail. The person dieting will give away their power and responsibility for the outcome either way. Blind faith. Total acceptance. Treasured ignorance. Avoidance of responsibility. Giving away of power, control, choice, responsibility. Its an interesting phenomenon.
